Phillies Acquire John Bowker

The Phillies have aquired John Bowker from the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Bowker is left handed and a lifetime .237 hitter with 17 homers in 561 big-league at-bats. He has played 19 games with the Pirates this season and hit .235, but Bowker has spent the majority of his season with Triple A Indianapolis, where he was hitting .308 with 15 homers and 76 RBIs in 105 games.

Meltzer’s Musings: Implications of JVR extension

The Flyers and James van Riemsdyk each took a bit of a leap of faith in agreeing to a six-year contract extension that, beginning in the 2012-13 season, will pay JVR $4.25 million on the salary cap. He will earn $1.65 million on the cap this season, the third and final year of his entry-level contract. For Philadelphia, this is another clear sign that the organization thinks that JVR turned the

Meltzer’s Musings: Couturier, Unlikely Jersey Sightings

As training camp slowly approaches, the Flyers are faced with the dual challenge of ridding themselves of a contract or two (they are currently at the maximum) and freeing up some salary cap space. Meltzer’s Musings: Exquisite Torture

Last week, I was having a catch-up phone conversation with an old writing colleague at a publishing company where I was the editor of a newsletter for benefits/HR managers.

Meltzer’s Musings: Players You Never Expected to See in Orange and Black

Ever since the Flyers signed Jaromir Jagr on July 1 of this summer, the reaction has been decidedly mixed. One thing that I think everyone can agree on: For many years, Jagr was just about the last player anyone would have expected to end up in Philadelphia. After all those years of Jagr being on the other side of the Flyers’ rivalries with the Penguins and Rangers, he was associated as being

Oswalt booed off mound in Phillies’ loss (AP)

It has been rare for Philadelphia’s heralded starting staff to hear boos this season.

Meltzer’s Musings: Meszaros and Pronger

Yesterday’s perfunctory press conference with Ilya Bryzgalov did not reveal anything out of ordinary.
