The Flyers entered the 2011-12 season counting on a breakout season from third-year pro James van Riemsdyk.

The Flyers entered the 2011-12 season counting on a breakout season from third-year pro James van Riemsdyk.

Of all of the Flyers’ rookies who stepped up this past season, Matt Read’s strong first-year campaign was simultaneously the most and least surprising.

One of the issues the Flyers sought to correct last off-season was the overload of natural centers in the lineup.

Without question, one of the most promising aspects of the 2011-12 season for the Philadelphia was the play of the team’s rookies and young players.

When the Flyers held their postseason wrapup press conferences last Thursday, Paul Holmgren said that the team needs to reduce its goals against average next season. Peter Laviolette agreed. However, when it came to the means of accomplishing the goal, the general manager and head coach did not appear to be completely on the same page right now

According to someone whom I consider a reliable source, Flyers’ All-Star defenseman Kimmo Timonen is going to be among the players needing postseason surgery.

Locker cleanout day is never much fun. The sting of the Flyers’ playoff defeat at the hands of the New Jersey Devils has not had time to truly give way to optimism about next season. This was a Philadelphia team that appeared capable of least getting to the Eastern Conference Finals if not coming out of the East.

Despite the bitter taste left by the Flyers’ four straight losses to the New Jersey Devils, the 2011-12 season was a successful one for the team.

In the rubble of what started out as a glorious playoff run, it is tough to focus on what was overall a season of progress for the Philadelphia Flyers.

It has come to this for the Philadelphia Flyers: win three straight elimination games or go home.
