Game 1 in San Diego: Wheeler vs. Darvish
Game 2 in San Diego: Nola vs. Snell
Game 3 in Philadelphia: Suarez (or Thor?) vs. Musgrove
With Nola and Wheeler both going, they MUST split in San Diego, even though it's a seven-game series.
Falter will have to play a big role in this series. I understand in retrospect why Thomson kept holding him back as insurance, but it would have been nice if he'd gotten an inning to shake off the rust at some point.

Suarez is going to have to give them some (effective) innings in game 3 - otherwise you are looking at essentially back to back bullpen games

G 1: Oct 18 (Wheeler)
G 2: Oct 19 (Nola)
G 3: Oct 21
G 4: Oct 22
G 5: Oct 23 (Wheeler)
G 6: Oct 24 (Nola)
G 7: Oct 25
I think it's Padres in 6, but the Phillies can win if (1) Wheeler and Nola go 3-1, (2) Steal Game 3 or 4 in Philly.

G4 for the Padres will be Clevinger/bullpen - will need Thor/our bullpen to out pitch themChristopher wrote: ↑Sun Oct 16, 2022 2:20 pm G 1: Oct 18 (Wheeler)

I agree - on your scenario for the Phils to have a shot

I go with Thor (Falter backing him up) in Game 3, followed by Suarez.
We're not going to make it through a 7-game series without Suarez pitching like a #3, so you just have to hand him the ball and have faith. Preferably you're handing him the ball in Game 4 with a 2-1 series lead. If he fails, you have have Wheeler/Nola the next 2 games.

Two teams that both have no business being here (they were both written off after the wild card series) playing lights out baseball. This is going to be a good series!
Got to keep our top 2 guys in the lineup hitting, getting on base and the rest should fill in nicely. As long as the pitching holds up we have a shot! Take it one game at a time.

As much as the underdog narrative is cool, you can also make an argument that the Phillies and Padres were the NL's two biggest regular season underachievers, given their rosters & payrolls. Yes, like everyone they had major injuries. But they also got healthier at the right time, compared especially to Braves, Dodgers and even Cardinals. If Helsley is healthy, we're in Offseason Thread time most likely.
All of which is to say, enjoy October. All that matters is still playing baseball.

I find it very strange that they'd be playing every day with no break for cross country travel. They will ask these guys to play back to back, get on a plane and play the very next day 3000 miles away. They'll go from SD to Philly and back to SD without a break, provided the series goes 6 or 7. Seems there should be a travel day. What happens if a game goes 18?
