Painter can't start the year in the rotation. He'd be shut down because of the innings by Sept
Let him pitch some at AAA, keep the innings low and bring him up mid season

and Nola is signed for just 16m next year. They are not going after Rodon/DeGrom. They already need at least 1 starter to start the season (assuming Falter is in the rotation), and trading Nola will make them worse. If come July they are struggling and in sell mode, trade Nola then.

I think we all believe in Eflin if he could keep his knees healthy.

Hey all. Hope you're well.
I'm still mulling my initial offseason thoughts. There are some interesting directions I think the Phillies could go.
But here's something else to chew on. We've long wanted to the Phillies to go aggressively in this direction to find talent. The biggest questions aren't interest level and salary, it's how to make another outfielder work. But wouldn't Masataka Yoshida be just the ticket for this offense? https://www.si.com/mlb/phillies/news/re ... a-phillies

It wouldn't be that hard to fit Yoshida. First of all, he's an on-base machine, which is what the Phillies need. If they deal Hoskins, I think Schwarber or Castellanos could play 1B and couldn't possibly be worse than Rhys. See, that was easy.

I think this is another big question as they decide what direction to go: Do you believe Jean Segura was healthy in September/October?
If yes, then maybe he's just starting to wear down and it's time to move on.
If no, and you think he can be healthy in 2023, then paying him $16M for just one more season could seem reasonable, depending what other decisions you make.
What they decide on Segura really is the pivot for the rest of the big-sized offseason moves.

The Phillies picked up Nola's $18M option for 2023, which was never really in doubt, especially after the wild card-clinching start in Houston.
The question will be the timing of the extension talks. Do they want to get other stuff done first? If they acquire more starting pitching, does that give them more leverage toward not necessarily needing to give into Nola's demands? They could also just let him pitch in 2023, on the notion that guys headed to FA often pitch better. I lean toward seeing if they can get him to sign for a four-year extension beyond 2023.
