[The Philadelphia Flyers signed defenseman Travis Sanheim to an eight-year extension carrying an average annual value of $6.25 million, the team announced Thursday.

The 26-year-old is under contract for $4.67 million this season before the extension begins in 2023-24.]

Tough to have to congratulate Fletcher for doing the obvious but not re-signing Sanheim would be the dumbest thing to happen here in a long time.

[Bill Meltzer @billmeltzer
Sean Couturier (back surgery recovery) had a setback per John Tortorella's game-day media availability. He has discontinued skating.

Additionally, status quo with Cam Atkinson (upper body). Still unable to skate.]

Back revision surgery. Out for three to four months. Doesn't look good. This could be a career ender.

Briere was on 97.5 on Friday and said that there was no information on what, if any, role there would be for current Flyers' senior advisers, Clarke, Barber, Holmgren and Lombardi. He also said this isn't the 70s or 80s any longer and the Flyers have to be built to play today's style.
