Great statistic. Shows how much they whiffed in not maintaining depth this winter (and/or living under the fantasy they'd have Painter on Opening Day, which was never going to be the case).
I do think Falter suffered from a little bad luck/lack of support with his 0-7, because -- in the aggregate -- he's pitched slightly better than Walker.
But the point still stands.
Plug Kyle Gibson in the #5 spot and we're probably 1-2 games over .500.
I think that the Phillies -- and probably most of us the board -- judged Gibson by his worst stretch and not by his general reliability (for a #5)

Reminder that the Phillies -- especially if the season is drain-circling, need to get Noah Song onto the roster for 90 days to retain his rights.
No reason to go through all this rigamarole and NOT do that, at this point. May as well see what he has and then let him be a Triple-A starter next year.

He cannot be worse than Covey. Just use him in long relief in the blowouts when we deploy our #5 starter.

I will never criticize the Phillies for not resigning Gibson. I still expect a big drop off by season's end
We may be seeing either McGarry or Abel soon

I didn't want Gibson, either.
BUT you have to look at him in the context of a #5 and -- as we're seeing now -- the consequences of having even worse #5
Even if Gibson was only "OK" in 60% of his starts, think about that upgrade and what it's worth to the rotation/bullpen/season.
Also, there weren't a bundle of guys like Gibson out there this offseason. The depth of back ends of rotations was crap. Hence what the Dodgers gave Noah (unwisely). I don't think the Phillies did a good job of assessing the market and anticipating the need for better depth. They let themselves be fooled by Falter's success vs. a bunch of bad opponents last August/September.

Abel's not ready. He's made 8 starts with a 5.45 ERA at Reading. ... Rushing him is a bad idea.
McGarry has only thrown 9.2 innings total this season in the minors. If he can help, it's in the bullpen, not the rotation.

Either they give one of the kids a shot or we have essentially bullpen games every 5th day

Nick Nelson will be next up. They're stretching him out.
He's made 6 starts in the minors with an ERA under 2.00
He'll be like Strahm, though: 4-5 innings, depending how efficient he is.

The Padres' lineup is a weird mix of future Hall of Famers and guys who would ride the bench for the Lancaster Barnstormers.
