Don't resign Harden.

Next year is going to be tough, but another year of Maxey development and with Tobias coming off the books, you can reload the year after.

You in no way even consider an Embiid trade. No athlete has ever been more loyal to this city and delivered despite constant criticism. We don't deserve him.

Unfortunately, i think their best option is to run it back with a new coach.

it'd be a different story if you could allocate Harden dollars to some FA but not signing Harden doesn't save them much. They'd only be $10MM under the cap. Plus, there isn't a needle moving FA out there.

No tradeable assets.

A better coach can make a difference. Look at Spoelstra v. Mazzulla

Sure, they are better off with Harden in 2023-24.

But they are NOT better off signing him for 3 or 4 years.

They are really in a situation where they essentially have to hope Harden leaves and then punt on Embiid's age 29-30 season ...... unless by some miracle they can make a run with Embiid/Maxey/Harris/roleplayers for one season. Then go for a big free agent in summer of 2024.

So if I'm understanding your post correctly, Harden's salary counts toward the salary cap for the 2023-2024 season even though he opted out of his contract? That seems weird.

You can go over the cap to resign your own players. Otherwise your options are limited

...and the Sixers hire Nick Nurse.

...and most likely Harden will be gone...

Not going to matter in terms of winning a title - but he is a good hire

Re Beal chatter

This is coming from someone who is a Harris hater. trading Harris' 1 year for Beal and his 4/200 would be foolish. this is also coming from a guy who likes Beal, or did years ago.

the one thing ill give beal is that he'd never disappear in the playoffs like Harris. Beal averaged 30/6/4 against the Sixers the last time Wizards were in the playoffs, playing alongside ball hog Westbrook. Still, bad contract exchange.

There's really no other path that doesn't involved punting on Embiid's age 29-30 season.
Hopefully they can leverage it into just a 2-year deal; if Houston offers 3 years, walk away.

Then the question is whether they're better off keeping Harris' expiring contract or trading it for pieces that could help beyond this season.
