Re: Philadelphia Phillies 2021 Offseason
i'm sure this has been noted but, "According to Spotrac, the Phillies luxury tax payroll currently sums to roughly $181.4 million, which is just $28.6 million under the tax threshold."
Yikes. unless DD gets creative and Mids pays, most of the names bandied about here and in the media are not possible.

Midds owns an MLB team. Paying money to make it good is what he's supposed to do. There is no rule against going over the luxury tax. ... (Also, the specific number of that tax ceiling could change during the freezeout)

Philadelphia Phillies
@Phillies
The Phillies have claimed RHP Yoan López off waivers from the Atlanta Braves. To make room on the 40-man roster, OF Roman Quinn was designated for assignment.
**Not sure we'll do a Roman Quinn Appreciation Thread, given the circumstances**

Agree, Christopher. Cohen's not worried about the Luxury Tax. How much money would the Phils have made if they went over last year and won the World Series? We'll never know. The Bryce Harper contract was huge, but a great investment for the Phils, with an increased attendance and gear sales.

So frustrating to see all this baseball news and the Phils not involved in any of it.

Re: Philadelphia Phillies 2021 Offseason
If the Phillies are going to generally sit it out, they should be looking to trade Wheeler/Nola/Harper/Realmuto/Hoskins.
It's a 75 win team as constructed.
Castellanos and a reliever makes them a maybe 80 win team. Not nearly good enough.

Re: Philadelphia Phillies 2021 Offseason
At this point it boils down to 1 question for Mids and Co...are you now willing to go over the Luxury tax? It is that simple. And if you are going over, fuck it, my as well really go over, like the Mets.

Re: Philadelphia Phillies 2021 Offseason
Yeah, technically, there are still combos that make for a solid offseason for the Phillies, from among Bryant/Taylor/Schwarber/Stroman/Suzuki
Maybe the best scenario is a 30+ day lockout in which the fans and media rip the Phillies for doing nothing & 2022 sales are slow, and then Midds decides to save face by spending money when the freezout ends.
