I'm not buying that some or all of those teams are not going to sell pieces at the deadline.

Yeah, someone will blink. I'll put my money on Red Sox and Mets.

Angels trade for Giolito

I think that they are going to regret not trading Ohtani for a haul when they had the chance

I think the Angels' odds of retaining him are better than some may think. (I still put the Dodgers #1, if they open their wallets)

Someone pointed out all the work the Angels have done to create the perfect environment for Ohtani's special skills set, including building a rotation that prioritizes extra off days for him at certain times, putting him above the other pitchers. If Moreno is willing to come close to market value, that could be a big incentive for Ohtani.

The Angels' confidence in O'Hoppe moving forward allowed them to include Edgar Quero -- one of baseball's best catching prospects -- in the deal to get Giolito.

Several teams who have spoken with the #Padres in recent days believe that All-Star closer Josh Hader and former Cy Young winner Blake Snell will be traded, particularly Hader.

part of its PR/damage control. if he leaves, ownership can say we made a run and made a competitive offer (assuming they do). Ohtani chose to leave.

The thing with trading Ohtani is that the Angels probably weren't going to get what they want (or should) for a two-month rental. The time to trade him was probably last year at this time. The Angels have decided to go all in with the hope that if they can make the playoffs and go deep into them that they might be able to re-sign him. I think it's still going to be the Dodgers, but there are only a handful of teams that have a realistic chance to sign him. I'd be shocked if it was anyone except the Dodgers, Padres, Giants, Mariners, Mets, Yankees or Angels. The Angels are just trying to give themselves a chance.

Phillies among those interested in 30-year-old Tigers LH starter Eduardo Rodriguez.

He's probably just a rental. He has a 3/49 left on his deal after this season, but also an opt-out and would surely earn (far) more on the open market.

So it's probably the cost of a rental, not the cost of a pitcher with 3 more years of control
