Your a ghost winChristopher wrote: ↑Thu Mar 10, 2022 8:35 pm International draft was dropped. Too divisive and complicated.
Still trying to figure how these 12-team playoffs work. We might have a fun new concept: A "ghost win"
-- 3 division winners, 2 of which get byes
-- "worst" division winner + three wild cards in the first round
The "worst" division winner is rewarded with an automatic 1-0 lead in a best-of-five series vs. the worst wild card.
So the worst wild card must win 3-of-4 to advance
I do like that concept. Puts a little more importance on winning the division

Re: The absurdity of a lockout
It does. But the quality of divisions can still vary.
Last year, the NL playoffs would have been:
-- Giants (107 wins) & Brewers (95 wins) get bye
-- 88-win Braves vs. 83-win Reds (Braves get 1-0 ghost lead)
-- 106-win Dodgers vs. 90-win Cardinals

Understand your point, but unless they are going to get rid of the division concept, there is no ideal solutionChristopher wrote: ↑Thu Mar 10, 2022 9:09 pm It does. But the quality of divisions can still vary.

Re: The absurdity of a lockout
Oh I'm with you 100%. And I think there should be a reward for winning a division. A bye is still a far, far greater reward than a ghost win, so we shouldn't get too uptight about the third wild card having a steep, steep hill to climb. Think how exciting it will be when some day the third wild card pulls its first upset.
It really does bring a lot of pressure/excitement in that first game. If the wild card wins, it's suddenly a best-of-3 series, and all the pressure reverts to the division winner.
I will also not miss one-and-done wild card games.

Some details emerging on how the expanded playoffs will work:
* No more Game 163 tiebreakers. All playoff spots will be determined through NFL-type tiebreaker formulas.
* No re-seeding for the LDS. 1st seed plays winner of 4 vs. 5 Wild Card Series. 2nd seed plays 3 vs 6 winner.

Players can be optioned no more than five teams in a season, so we'll see far less yo-yo-ing of guys coming up for a weekend and then returning to LHV

OK, forget the ghost wins. They're out.
First round: Top two teams get byes. Worst division winner + three wild cards play in best-of-three series.
That's great news ... for whatever team sneaks in as the third wild-card with 82-84 wins (maybe) and is hoping to pull a first-round stunner.

Unsurprisingly, no Rule 5 draft this year.
