17. Philadelphia Phillies:
Justin Crawford, CF, Bishop Gorman HS (NV)

Who is Crawford? Another first-round pick whose father is a recently retired major leaguer, Crawford (son of Carl) is one of the most electrifying players in this class with tools including 80-grade speed. The big question for Crawford is whether he'll hit enough to get to his raw power in games, but there are few players in this class with more upside than the Nevada prep who played at the same high school that produced Joey Gallo and Yankees first-round pick Austin Wells.

Why the Phillies took him here: Again, teams don't really draft for need, but boy do the Phillies need a center fielder -- and Crawford's speed means he projects as an elite defender in center. He's also a nice fit for the farm system after the Phillies drafted two high school pitchers in the past two drafts (Mick Abel and Andrew Painter). Those two are performing well so far, and Crawford gives the Phillies a third straight high schooler who could end up being a steal at their draft position. -- Schoenfield

17) Philadelphia Phillies:
Justin Crawford, OF, Bishop Gorman HS, LV

The son of longtime Major Leaguer Carl Crawford, Justin Crawford possesses a lot of the same tools his dad did, particularly the elite speed. That speed should enable him to be a basestealing threat throughout his career, and he has a good chance to stay in center field, because the one tool he has better than his dad is his throwing arm. It’s a top-of-the-lineup profile with a chance to be an above-average hitter. – Mayo

17 Philadelphia Phillies

Justin Crawford, OF, Bishop Gorman HS (NV): Yet another draftee with a big-league father, Crawford's father Carl played in the majors for more than a decade and made four All-Star teams along the way. Comparing the two is lazy, but there is some validity to the thought. Crawford has a feel for hitting and near-elite speed; he just needs to get stronger in order to maximize his potential.

Rocker or no Rocker--and I suppose he was my dream scenario more than something realistic--I thought the Phils were probably going to go for a pitcher again at 17. First, this draft seems to be stronger on the pitching side than the hitting side, and there's also the Phils' stated philosophy of "grow the arms, buy the bats." That may be more true of the previous regime than the current one, though. There were some pitchers I thought fit the Phils' approach available at 17, as well.

But, the Phils took a toolsy HS outfielder. Where have we heard that before? And to an extent, that's the risky part of this. Although Brian Barber (head of scouting) and Preston Mattingly (head of player development) haven't been around long and thus can't be blamed, the Phils have a very poor history of developing high school outfielders into major leaguers. Mickey Moniak, Cornelius Randolph, Larry Greene Jr., Anthony Hewitt, Greg Golson...and so on. On the positive side, Crawford was mocked mid-1st round most of the time, so it's not as though the Phils reached with this pick. And as the son of a big leaguer, I don't think he'll be wowed or caught off-guard too much by what he experiences along the development track. The questions will be whether and how the hit tool develops. The athleticism certainly seems to project to "big league centerfielder." How far does the bat take him ? We'll have to wait 3-4 years to find out.

Phillies Pick: Round 3

Gabriel Rincones Jr. OF

Class: 4YR JR
Height: 6' 4"
Weight: 225
Pick Value: $659.80k
Throws: R
DOB: 03/03/01

[Rincones’ father, Gabriel Sr., pitched briefly in the Mariners organization. His son is a pure hitter who played for H.B. Plant, the Tampa school that produced Wade Boggs and Kyle Tucker, among others. Rincones went from high school to starring at St. Petersburg Junior College in 2020, then posted a 36-game hitting streak in 2021 and was a first-team All-American. He was drafted in the 19th round by the Padres, then moved on to Florida Atlantic in 2022, earning Conference USA Newcomer of the Year honors by hitting 19 homers with a 1.110 OPS. It’s Rincones’ left-handed bat that has scouts interested. He’s always been able to hit with an advanced approach at the plate, something that continued with high walk and low strikeout rates after the move to Division I baseball. The power started really showing up this season, especially to his pull side, but he can drive the ball to all fields. He punishes fastballs with pitchers only finding success in getting him out with offspeed stuff. Rincones is going to have to hit to become a big leaguer because he is limited defensively. He has a below-average arm and doesn’t run well, meaning he’s likely either a left fielder or a first baseman. He likely has shown enough on the offensive side for teams that like college performers to consider him on Day 2 of the Draft.]
