Zach Eflin declines $15M Phillies option, hits free agent market.

Will be interesting to see Eflin's market, given his injuries. I still think his most value comes as a 4/5 starter, but his performance as a reliever in October was tantalizing, especially when they moved him out of the closer role and just sought shutdown innings.

As I've said, they need SP for the first half of the season to counteract some of the workload issues and protect younger guys like Painter. So I wouldn't mind Eflin starting 2023 at the back end of the rotation and then eventually put him back in the bullpen again.

But I don't know what I'd pay for that. He's not getting $15M in 2023, but he's probably seeking double that in guaranteed money over 3 years. Would I pay 3/33 for a swing guy like Eflin? Probably not. but it's not unreasonable given his versatility. It's a hell of a lot better than spending that kind of money on Corey Knebel.

3/33 for Eflin would be a steal. he was penciled as their no. 3 starter. he could start and/or relieve. they paid Knebel 10MM and paid robertson more than that a couple years ago. hunter was almost $10MM.

The more I read, the more it looks like Eflin will find someone to guarantee him way more than 3/33, in which case I'm 100% happy for him and don't think the Phillies should (or will) go there.

How much does Middleton want to get back to the big dance?

The farm is not rich enough to assume an 2007-2011 type window. They 100% need to be in on guys like Turner, Correa, DeGrom, and Rodon.

And they must, must get better in the Latin America markets.

Too risky with his injury history

I expect them to let Segura go and try to sign one of the SS
I would be very surprised if they go after any top starters. I think that with Abel & Painter on the horizon, that they sign a lower end starter and go with Falter to start the year

Not really interested in Swanson. He struck out 182 times in 2022. The Phillies don't need another guy like that in the lineup. Also not high on Correa. His injury history is what scared teams off last year and I think it's still valid. Push hard for Turner and if they can't get him, push for Bogaerts.

Trade Hoskins.
Trade Nola.
Don't re-sign Segura. ✅
Bring Painter to ST.
