Agreed Chris

If healthy - it is a great deal for the Rays. Eflin is solid

Phillies can't sit back. They need high quality 3/4 guy and depth, even with the apparent riches in the system.

Much as I'd love him, I don't see Rodon as a real possibility. There are still some solid guys out there, though. Hopefully they know which one to target. Beyond that, would mind taking a flyer on someone to challenge Falter for #5. Can never have enough depth.

And, just as I speak:

Feinsand says the Phillies are one of the teams connected to Jameson Taillon.

Not fully sure how I feel about Taillon. My top two guys are still Rodon & Quintana.

I think I'd rather have a lefty, and one of my prerequisites is: Is this a guy I'd give the ball in a big playoff game?

Looking at the rest of the field, Taillon is probably close to the top, but it also depends on cost. Mixed feelings on Heaney, Stripling, Walker, too.

(I'm off the Eovaldi push because I forgot about the compensation from the QO)

Taillon's price is probably around 4/60.

I still think Quintana for 2 years is the play.

Who they sign might give us a hint about Nola. If it's Taillon on four years, they might be looking to protect themselves in the event of Nola leaving.

Sign Quintana, extend Nola long term, and LFG with Wheeler/Nola/Quintana/Suarez/Falter/Painter/Abel

4/60 is a lot to pay for that privilege when you also have Suarez/Falter/Sanchez and the kids on the farm.
Obviously, you need guys to log lots of quality innings during the season, but you also want a guy who can take the ball in a big October moment

I mean, you have to game these things out a little bit, right? There is security in locking up Taillon for four years, if he's solid.
We also only have two more years of Wheeler.

2023
Wheeler
Nola
Suarez
Taillon
Falter/Painter

2024
Wheeler
???
Saurez
Taillon
Painter
Falter/Abel

2025
???
???
Painter
Abel
Suarez
Taillon
Falter

Eflin received the largest free agent contract in Rays history

Is there Bryce signing level of excitement in Tampa?

It's a great deal for the Rays if Eflin starts 50-60 games in those three years. Not so much if he starts 30.
