I'd almost say, mostly serious, that they should send them all for eye examsbigel57 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 01, 2023 7:44 pmSeems like a compete breakdown in all facets. I have never seen an offense so consistently chasing pitches and striking out a such an alarming rate. Up and down the lineupChristopher wrote: ↑Thu Jun 01, 2023 7:18 pm Hard to say. That doesn't tend to be his style.
Their options are super-limited right now.
Like, it's clear they need pitching. But they also have a punchless offense, so why would it matter if they added pitching?

Matt Gelb
@MattGelb
The Phillies are swept in New York. They have scored nine runs in their last five games. They have struck out 58 times in their last five games. They are in a dark place right now.

Have to assume that Walker is going to be shut down, so now they need 2 starters
As Chris referenced - adding pitching won't make their offense suck less
Bohm is mediocre, but mediocre is better than Drew Ellis (and why the hell did he pinch hit for Marsh - I don't care if it was a LH)
Schwarber sucks and Trea is worse than Didi. Only 10+ years left on that albatross of a contract
The investment in Trea is going to haunt this team for a decade

It's a pipe dream, but has there been any mention of Harper at 1B? I wouldn't want to rush him, but then they could shuffle Schwarber to some DH starts and start looking at other outfielders.
It's just unrealistic to think they'll bench Schwarber, as much as it makes sense.
They simply need the guys making $20M+ a year (Harper, Schwarber, Castellanos, Turner, Realmuto) to start doing their jobs. (Harper excluded from criticism). That's about $110 of payroll right there, and they shouldn't need a Simon Muzziotti or Kody Clemens to serve as a spark plug.
While the hitting is a bigger problem than the pitching, they're simply going to need some arms or they won't survive the summer. Nick Nelson will be added. The trade problem is that almost no one is out of contention and the teams that are (KC, Oak) have zero arms. They just need to gamble on someone, maybe a Lance Lynn. (yes, he's been awful, but he was OK last year)

At least Tartabull was on an episode of Seinfeld (as was Roger McDowell)bigel57 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 01, 2023 9:11 pmTheTurner deal makes the Danny Tartabull deal look like goldFolesMVP09 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 01, 2023 8:48 pm Have to assume that Walker is going to be shut down, so now they need 2 starters

I'm bullish on Turner for the long run. His head is just not in a good place right now.
Schwarber is the biggest problem.
Castellanos has admirably turned himself into a .300 hitter, but one without any punch, which ain't great.
Realmuto looks worn down. He needs more days off to survive the summer and have a chance to rebound.
As Bel and others have mentioned, almost everyone in this lineup has a poor approach at the plate right now, and pitchers are just totally unafraid and feasting off us. Need to find a way to start making pitchers sweat, and then -- as I've seen so often over the years -- other things will start to click into play once pitchers are making decision from a position of stress. Right now, everyone WANTS to face us.
