Left-hander Kyle Harrison is being called up by the San Francisco Giants and is expected to pitch Tuesday in Philadelphia, according to sources familiar with the situation. Harrison is the Giants’ top prospect and regarded as their best pitching prospect since Madison Bumgarner.

The good news: The Phillies have the #1 wild card and a 3-game edge over the Giants for that spot.

The bad news: The Giants, Cubs, Reds, Marlins, Diamondbacks are all bunched within ONE GAME of each other. If 3 of those 5 get really hot, the Phillies can easily miss the playoffs.

The reality news: At least we don't have to worry about the Padres and their eternally-awaiting "making a run." They're only a half-game ahead of the tanking Mets.

Yes, Phillies often fare badly in these scenarios (rookies, lefties, debuts), but there's a reason the Giants have waited this long to call him up. He has a 4.66 ERA and 1.523 WHIP at Triple-A this year. He strikes out a ton of guys, but has control problems. Phillies will need to exhibit patience (I know, I know).

Phillies and Giants both enter this series with some rotation question, so Giants aren't making this move from a position of strength. CBS Sports: "For all intents and purposes, the Giants have two starting pitchers: Logan Webb and Alex Cobb. They have operated with a series of openers and bullpen games all season, with Anthony DeSclafani, Jake Junis, Ross Stripling, and Alex Wood providing bulk innings. DeSclafani (elbow) and Stripling (back) are on the injured list, however."

Phillies will see Cobb, but not Webb. ... Giants probably going bullpen game, Harrison's debut, Cobb.

Phillies crossing their fingers by going with Nola, Walker, and Lorenzen. Walker's coming back early from his short period of dead-arm down time. They probably won't want him to go deep on Tuesday, so getting 7 today from Wheeler and 7 Monday from Nola would be good. It's just that time of year.

Padres play the Marlins next, so we will have to root for them

Marsh back in the lineup today. No one needs to be demoted until tomorrow, as teams in the LL Classic get one extra player.
